On Wednesday night, the halls of the Sir John A. Macdonald building were dressed in elegance to host the official celebration of Hispanic-Latin American Heritage Month in Canada. It was a time of pleasant camaraderie among those attending the event.
Several federal authorities were present, including Senator Rosa Gálvez, of Peruvian origin, as well as the Minister of Tourism, Soraya Martínez, born in Chile, and the former Minister of Transport, Pablo Rodríguez, from Argentina. Also accompanying the ceremony were several members of the federal Parliament, including Julie Dzerowicz and Judy Sgro, both of whom have made significant contributions to the community.
In their speeches, the authorities emphasized the importance of the Hispanic-Latin American community, with a growing presence in the context of Canadian multiculturalism. They praised and encouraged the members of this thriving group.
The Highlight of the Celebration
The peak moment of the event occurred when Prime Minister Justin Trudeau entered the main hall. Most of those present welcomed him with cheers and applause, and many made their way through the crowd to share a moment with the leader, greet him, or take a photo. Trudeau, smiling, seemed to enjoy the expressions of support.
During his speech, the Canadian leader expressed affection, respect, and gratitude towards the community celebrating this occasion. He stated that Canada is also part of Latin America, and at one point, he praised the election of Claudia Sheinbaum as the president of Mexico, the first female head of state in that country’s history.
Meanwhile, many members of the growing Hispanic-Latin American community, some traveling from distant cities, had the opportunity to exchange experiences, plan projects, and connect, all while enjoying delicious dishes and refreshing beverages that rounded out the evening after hours of healthy recreation.
