Can parents trust the new ChatGPT for teens to keep their children safe?

OpenAI launched a new experience of ChatGPT Designed specifically for teenagers, with enhanced security restrictions and parental control tools, the initiative seeks to answer a question that increasingly concerns families: how to allow young people to benefit from artificial intelligence without exposing them to potentially harmful content or interactions.

The new ChatGPT for Teens It began implementation on August 18 and is aimed at users between the ages of 13 and 17.. OpenAI It notes that when the system identifies an account as belonging to someone under 18, it automatically activates the teen experience. This version includes additional protections against content related to self-harm, violence, eating disorders, dangerous activities, and sexual or graphic material.

The company also uses an age prediction system that analyzes different signals associated with an account, such as the topics the user discusses, usage times and patterns, and how long the account has been open.. OpenAI It acknowledges that this mechanism is not infallible and allows adults to verify their age if they were incorrectly classified as minors.

In addition to content restrictions, the new experience incorporates tools designed to promote healthier technology use. These include reminders related to sensitive images and features aimed at fostering learning and reducing the likelihood that interaction with artificial intelligence will replace real-world relationships and support.

Parents will be able to receive alerts, but they will not be able to read the conversations.

One of the system’s core features is parental controls. Parents or guardians can link their account to a teenager’s and manage certain settings, set quiet hours, and receive safety notifications in situations considered high-risk. However, there is a significant limitation: parents cannot access or read their children’s conversations. Notifications are only triggered in specific circumstances, for example, when the systems of OpenAI A specialized team identifies signs that could indicate a serious case of self-harm. Alerts may also be triggered related to certain situations of violence or eating disorders.

Concern about the use of artificial intelligence among teenagers has intensified as young people incorporate these tools to study, search for information, solve problems, and also discuss personal matters. OpenAI It maintains that nearly nine out of ten teenagers who use ChatGPT They use it for a week for learning, information, skills development, or productivity.

The launch, however, poses a broader challenge for families: determining to what extent technological safeguards are sufficient to protect children. Although the new system incorporates specific restrictions and intervention mechanisms, OpenAI He acknowledges that his systems are not perfect.

For now, the company’s strategy focuses on combining artificial intelligence, parental controls, and risk detection mechanisms, rather than completely blocking access for teenagers. The goal is for young people to be able to use these tools to learn and develop skills, but within a more secure environment and with adults who play an active role in their safety..
