Seg\u00fan <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Statistics Canada<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, cerca de 750.000 canadienses viven actualmente con Alzheimer, la enfermedad neurodegenerativa m\u00e1s com\u00fan asociada a la demencia, que en 2022 fue la novena causa de muerte en el pa\u00eds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La Agencia de Salud P\u00fablica de Canad\u00e1 (ASPC) estima que entre abril de 2022 y marzo de 2023 casi 487.000 personas mayores de 65 a\u00f1os conviv\u00edan con demencia diagnosticada. De ellas, unas 99.000 recibieron un diagn\u00f3stico reciente. Estas cifras no incluyen todos los tipos de demencia distintos al Alzheimer, lo que sugiere que el impacto real podr\u00eda ser a\u00fan mayor.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Proyecciones al alza y fuerte impacto en mujeres<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Las proyecciones muestran un crecimiento acelerado. La Sociedad de Alzheimer de Canad\u00e1 advierte que para 2030 el n\u00famero de personas con demencia podr\u00eda acercarse al mill\u00f3n, y que para 2050 m\u00e1s de 1,7 millones de canadienses vivir\u00e1n con la enfermedad. Cada d\u00eda, m\u00e1s de 414 personas desarrollan demencia en Canad\u00e1, lo que equivale a m\u00e1s de 17 diagn\u00f3sticos cada hora.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El impacto es especialmente significativo en las mujeres: en 2020, el 61,8% de los casos correspond\u00eda a mujeres, y se espera que para 2050 m\u00e1s de un mill\u00f3n de ellas vivan con demencia. Adem\u00e1s, m\u00e1s de la mitad de los cuidadores en el pa\u00eds son mujeres, lo que incrementa las presiones sociales y econ\u00f3micas asociadas al problema.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aunque la tasa de nuevos diagn\u00f3sticos ha disminuido levemente en la \u00faltima d\u00e9cada, el envejecimiento de la poblaci\u00f3n canadiense asegura que el n\u00famero de casos seguir\u00e1 en aumento. La demencia no solo acorta la esperanza de vida, sino que incrementa la vulnerabilidad a complicaciones como neumon\u00eda, enfermedades card\u00edacas, accidentes cerebrovasculares, infecciones y ca\u00eddas accidentales.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Actualmente no existen tratamientos capaces de detener, retrasar o revertir la enfermedad.
