La organizaci\u00f3n se\u00f1al\u00f3 que actualmente se observan se\u00f1ales epidemiol\u00f3gicas similares a las del gran brote ocurrido entre 2004 y 2005 en la regi\u00f3n del Oc\u00e9ano \u00cdndico, lo que refuerza la preocupaci\u00f3n de una posible repetici\u00f3n del escenario.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El chikungunya es una enfermedad viral que produce fiebre alta, fuertes dolores articulares y, en algunos casos, puede derivar en complicaciones graves o incluso la muerte. El virus se transmite principalmente a trav\u00e9s de la picadura de mosquitos del tipo Aedes aegypti y Aedes albopictus, este \u00faltimo conocido como mosquito tigre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seg\u00fan la OMS, la enfermedad ya se ha detectado en 119 pa\u00edses, exponiendo a m\u00e1s de 5.600 millones de personas a potenciales contagios. Desde principios de 2025, los territorios franceses de ultramar como Reuni\u00f3n y Mayotte, as\u00ed como Mauricio, han reportado brotes significativos, estim\u00e1ndose que un tercio de la poblaci\u00f3n de Reuni\u00f3n podr\u00eda estar ya infectada. La transmisi\u00f3n tambi\u00e9n se ha extendido a pa\u00edses de \u00c1frica como Madagascar, Somalia y Kenia, y a regiones del sur de Asia.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Cambio clim\u00e1tico ampl\u00eda alcance del mosquito<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">En Europa, se han identificado casos importados relacionados con el brote del Oc\u00e9ano \u00cdndico, incluyendo transmisi\u00f3n local en Francia y posibles casos en Italia. Esta expansi\u00f3n geogr\u00e1fica se ve favorecida por el cambio clim\u00e1tico, que permite que el mosquito colonice nuevas zonas al norte del planeta.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La OMS advirti\u00f3 que, en poblaciones con poca inmunidad colectiva, el virus puede propagarse r\u00e1pidamente y afectar hasta tres cuartas partes de la poblaci\u00f3n. Aunque la tasa de letalidad del chikungunya es inferior al uno por ciento, la organizaci\u00f3n se\u00f1al\u00f3 que, en caso de una epidemia con millones de infectados, ese porcentaje podr\u00eda traducirse en miles de muertes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La similitud de los s\u00edntomas con los del dengue y el Zika complica su diagn\u00f3stico y control. Por ello, la OMS llam\u00f3 a reforzar los sistemas de vigilancia epidemiol\u00f3gica, mejorar la capacidad diagn\u00f3stica y fomentar campa\u00f1as de prevenci\u00f3n, especialmente en zonas con alta presencia de mosquitos Aedes.
