La medida, que responde a una orden directa del presidente Donald Trump, representa un giro hist\u00f3rico en el sistema monetario del pa\u00eds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La decisi\u00f3n se traducir\u00e1 en un ahorro anual estimado de 56 millones de d\u00f3lares en materiales, ya que cada centavo cuesta casi 4 centavos en producirse, seg\u00fan datos de la propia Casa de la Moneda. \u201cDurante demasiado tiempo, Estados Unidos ha acu\u00f1ado centavos que literalmente nos cuestan m\u00e1s de dos centavos. \u00a1Es un desperdicio!\u201d, escribi\u00f3 Trump en su red <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Truth Social<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> al anunciar su decisi\u00f3n en febrero.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Fin de una era para la moneda m\u00e1s producida del pa\u00eds<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Los centavos, la moneda m\u00e1s com\u00fanmente acu\u00f1ada en Estados Unidos, representaron m\u00e1s de la mitad de toda la producci\u00f3n monetaria del pa\u00eds en 2024, con 3.200 millones de unidades emitidas. No obstante, su utilidad ha sido cada vez m\u00e1s cuestionada en una econom\u00eda que avanza hacia los pagos digitales y donde los precios rara vez requieren su uso.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El secretario del Tesoro, respaldado por una ley que le otorga la facultad de acu\u00f1ar monedas seg\u00fan las \u201cnecesidades del pa\u00eds\u201d, tiene autoridad legal para suspender su producci\u00f3n sin requerir aprobaci\u00f3n inmediata del Congreso.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aunque el Ejecutivo puede detener la producci\u00f3n, la eliminaci\u00f3n formal del centavo requerir\u00e1 una ley del Congreso, ya que \u00e9ste regula las especificaciones monetarias como tama\u00f1o, peso y contenido met\u00e1lico.
