Muchos afirman sentirse \u00ababandonados\u00bb, \u00abdeshumanizados\u00bb y sin alternativas tras a\u00f1os de tratamientos que, aseguran, no han logrado aliviar su sufrimiento.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El debate se intensific\u00f3 despu\u00e9s de que el comit\u00e9 concluyera que el sistema de salud canadiense a\u00fan no cuenta con las herramientas cl\u00ednicas necesarias para determinar con suficiente certeza cu\u00e1ndo una enfermedad mental puede considerarse irremediable y c\u00f3mo distinguir una solicitud de muerte asistida de un episodio de conducta suicida. Por ello, recomend\u00f3 mantener la exclusi\u00f3n vigente para este grupo de pacientes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La legislaci\u00f3n canadiense ten\u00eda previsto extender la elegibilidad del programa a personas cuya \u00fanica condici\u00f3n fuera una enfermedad mental, pero la medida ha sido aplazada en varias ocasiones debido a las dudas expresadas por profesionales de la salud, organizaciones m\u00e9dicas y gobiernos provinciales. Actualmente, esa exclusi\u00f3n se mantiene hasta 2027, salvo que el Parlamento decida modificar nuevamente la ley.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Pacientes y especialistas mantienen posiciones encontradas<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Algunas de las personas afectadas aseguran que retrasaron intentos de suicidio porque esperaban acceder a un proceso regulado de muerte asistida. Tras conocerse la recomendaci\u00f3n del comit\u00e9, afirman que sienten que el Estado les ha cerrado la \u00fanica opci\u00f3n que consideraban viable despu\u00e9s de a\u00f1os de convivir con enfermedades mentales graves y resistentes a m\u00faltiples tratamientos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sin embargo, especialistas en salud mental respaldan la cautela. La psic\u00f3loga cl\u00ednica Margaret McKinnon, quien compareci\u00f3 ante el comit\u00e9, sostuvo que muchas personas con trastornos mentales graves pueden recuperarse incluso despu\u00e9s de largos periodos de sufrimiento, por lo que considera extremadamente complejo concluir que una enfermedad psiqui\u00e1trica es realmente irreversible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El informe tambi\u00e9n reaviv\u00f3 el debate sobre la disponibilidad de servicios de salud mental en Canad\u00e1.
