Para los m\u00e1s de 256,000 latinoamericanos que viven en Calgary y Edmonton seg\u00fan el censo de 2021, este debate no es un asunto pol\u00edtico lejano: toca su estatus migratorio, su acceso a servicios p\u00fablicos y su futuro en la provincia.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h2><b>\u00bfQu\u00e9 pas\u00f3 el 13 de mayo?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La jueza Shaina Leonard del Tribunal de Justicia del Rey de Alberta anul\u00f3 la aprobaci\u00f3n de la petici\u00f3n separatista del grupo Stay Free Alberta. El fallo determin\u00f3 que separarse de Canad\u00e1 violar\u00eda los Tratados 7 y 8, firmados con las Primeras Naciones, y que el Estado no consult\u00f3 a esas comunidades como era su obligaci\u00f3n. Smith calific\u00f3 la decisi\u00f3n de \u00abantidemocr\u00e1tica\u00bb y anunci\u00f3 que apelar\u00e1, mientras estudia agregar la pregunta de separaci\u00f3n al refer\u00e9ndum del 19 de octubre de 2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>\u00bfPor qu\u00e9 esto le importa a la comunidad latina en Alberta?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alberta tiene dos de las comunidades latinoamericanas m\u00e1s grandes de Canad\u00e1: seg\u00fan el censo de 2021, Calgary albergaba aproximadamente 134,000 personas de origen latinoamericano y Edmonton cerca de 122,000. Muchas de ellas son residentes permanentes, trabajadores temporales o est\u00e1n en proceso de obtener la ciudadan\u00eda. Si la provincia eventualmente se separara de Canad\u00e1, toda esa trayectoria migratoria quedar\u00eda en una zona de incertidumbre legal sin precedentes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>\u00bfQu\u00e9 perder\u00edan los inmigrantes si Alberta se independiza?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La ciudadan\u00eda canadiense y los derechos que de ella dependen, como el pasaporte, la movilidad interprovincial o el acceso a programas federales, est\u00e1n atados al gobierno federal, no al provincial. Un Alberta soberano tendr\u00eda que definir sus propias reglas de ciudadan\u00eda y Canad\u00e1 decidir\u00eda si reconoce alg\u00fan tipo de estatus a quienes se queden. Esa transici\u00f3n podr\u00eda tomar a\u00f1os y generar una incertidumbre enorme para quienes est\u00e1n en medio de un proceso migratorio.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>\u00bfY qu\u00e9 se propone en cuanto a los inmigrantes?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Incluso antes de cualquier separaci\u00f3n, la premier Smith ya incluy\u00f3 en su lista de preguntas para el refer\u00e9ndum de octubre dos medidas que afectan directamente a los inmigrantes: una que busca restringir el acceso a programas provinciales: salud, educaci\u00f3n y servicios sociales, a quienes no sean ciudadanos, residentes permanentes o personas con estatus migratorio aprobado; y otra que propone cobrar tarifas adicionales a quienes tengan estatus migratorio no permanente en Alberta. Esto podr\u00eda afectar a miles de trabajadores hispanos con permisos temporales.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>\u00bfPor qu\u00e9 este no es un hecho aislado?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El movimiento separatista albertano forma parte de una tendencia m\u00e1s amplia que se repite en distintos pa\u00edses: movimientos regionales o nacionales que combinan la b\u00fasqueda de autonom\u00eda econ\u00f3mica con un discurso restrictivo frente a la inmigraci\u00f3n. En Europa, varios gobiernos han recortado derechos de inmigrantes; en Estados Unidos, el debate migratorio sigue siendo el eje de la pol\u00edtica. En Canad\u00e1, Alberta es la punta visible de esa misma ola.
