El caso tiene implicaciones enormes: el Esequibo es rico en oro, diamantes, madera y est\u00e1 justo al lado de uno de los mayores descubrimientos petroleros del siglo XXI.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>\u00bfDe qu\u00e9 se trata el conflicto?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El diferendo tiene ra\u00edces en el siglo XIX. En 1899, un tribunal arbitral internacional traz\u00f3 la frontera entre Venezuela y la entonces colonia brit\u00e1nica de la Guayana Brit\u00e1nica. Venezuela nunca reconoci\u00f3 ese laudo y desde hace d\u00e9cadas reclama el Esequibo como territorio propio. En 2018, Guyana llev\u00f3 el caso a la CIJ para obtener un fallo definitivo y vinculante.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>\u00bfQu\u00e9 argumenta cada pa\u00eds?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guyana pide a la corte que valide el laudo arbitral de 1899 y que ordene a Venezuela desmantelar los mapas, leyes y hasta las elecciones organizadas en el Esequibo. El canciller guyan\u00e9s, Hugh Todd, describi\u00f3 la disputa como una amenaza existencial para su naci\u00f3n. Venezuela, por su parte, insiste en que la CIJ no tiene jurisdicci\u00f3n para resolver el caso y que el \u00fanico instrumento v\u00e1lido es el Acuerdo de Ginebra de 1966.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>\u00bfPor qu\u00e9 le interesa a la comunidad hispana en Canad\u00e1?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canad\u00e1 alberga importantes comunidades de venezolanas. El resultado de este juicio afectar\u00e1 directamente la estabilidad pol\u00edtica y econ\u00f3mica de Venezuela, ya de por s\u00ed en crisis y podr\u00eda agudizar la emigraci\u00f3n venezolana hacia Canad\u00e1.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">En s\u00edntesis: la CIJ est\u00e1 escuchando uno de los casos territoriales m\u00e1s relevantes de Am\u00e9rica del Sur.
