En Canad\u00e1, el D\u00eda Internacional del Trabajo llega en un momento particularmente cargado: el mercado laboral lleva m\u00e1s de un a\u00f1o absorbiendo el impacto de los aranceles estadounidenses, la tasa de desempleo se mantiene elevada y muchos trabajadores inmigrantes sienten una presi\u00f3n que va m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de los titulares econ\u00f3micos.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>El contexto hist\u00f3rico<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El 1 de mayo conmemora la lucha hist\u00f3rica de los trabajadores por la jornada de ocho horas, una conquista que a finales del siglo XIX no exist\u00eda para la gran mayor\u00eda de quienes vend\u00edan su fuerza de trabajo. Las marchas de Chicago de 1886, que terminaron en violencia y en el ahorcamiento de l\u00edderes sindicales, son el origen directo de esta fecha. Con el tiempo, el D\u00eda del Trabajo se convirti\u00f3 en una jornada de reivindicaci\u00f3n global que hoy abarca temas muy distintos: desde el salario m\u00ednimo y la seguridad en el trabajo, hasta la inteligencia artificial y los derechos de los trabajadores de plataformas digitales.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">En Canad\u00e1, varias organizaciones sindicales tienen actos programados. El Consejo de Trabajo de Vancouver organiza una marcha y un acto en el Russian Hall. En Edmonton, el Consejo de Trabajo del Distrito tambi\u00e9n convoc\u00f3 una celebraci\u00f3n. El sindicato Unifor, uno de los m\u00e1s grandes del pa\u00eds, public\u00f3 esta semana una declaraci\u00f3n en la que se\u00f1ala que los trabajadores han estado moviliz\u00e1ndose desde el a\u00f1o pasado en defensa del empleo canadiense, bajo la campa\u00f1a Protect Canadian Jobs, una respuesta directa a las tarifas impuestas por la administraci\u00f3n Trump.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Un a\u00f1o de aranceles: lo que cambi\u00f3 en el empleo<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Desde que entraron en vigor los primeros aranceles estadounidenses a principios de 2025, el mercado laboral canadiense ha mostrado se\u00f1ales mixtas. Los sectores de bienes, manufactura, acer\u00eda, industria forestal han perdido decenas de miles de empleos. Al mismo tiempo, el sector de servicios ha compensado parte de esas p\u00e9rdidas, aunque con empleos que no siempre tienen las mismas condiciones ni el mismo salario.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">M\u00e1s de un mill\u00f3n de canadienses est\u00e1n buscando trabajo sin encontrarlo. Para los trabajadores inmigrantes, que a menudo est\u00e1n sobrerrepresentados en los sectores m\u00e1s vulnerables y tienen menos acceso a las redes de apoyo informales, este contexto se traduce en mayor incertidumbre.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Qu\u00e9 significa el 1 de mayo para un trabajador inmigrante en Canad\u00e1<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Para muchos hispanos que llegaron a Canad\u00e1 en busca de mejores condiciones laborales, el D\u00eda del Trabajo tiene una resonancia especial. En Colombia, M\u00e9xico, Venezuela, Per\u00fa o Ecuador, esta fecha es feriado nacional y se vive con marchas, discursos y una fuerte presencia sindical. En Canad\u00e1, el feriado del trabajo se celebra en septiembre, el primer lunes del mes, siguiendo la tradici\u00f3n norteamericana. El 1 de mayo no es d\u00eda no laborable en la mayor\u00eda de las provincias, aunque es un momento de visibilidad para el movimiento obrero.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lo que s\u00ed tiene vigencia hoy es la conversaci\u00f3n sobre derechos: el derecho a ser pagado correctamente, el derecho a no ser clasificado como contratista independiente cuando en realidad se trabaja como empleado, el derecho a condiciones de trabajo seguras. El gobierno federal abri\u00f3 recientemente una consulta p\u00fablica sobre robo salarial y clasificaci\u00f3n err\u00f3nea, dos problemas que afectan de manera desproporcionada a los trabajadores inmigrantes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Un horizonte incierto, pero con se\u00f1ales<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El gobierno de Mark Carney ha se\u00f1alado que la defensa del empleo canadiense frente a los aranceles ser\u00e1 una de sus prioridades. La revisi\u00f3n del tratado de libre comercio entre Canad\u00e1, Estados Unidos y M\u00e9xico prevista para m\u00e1s adelante en 2026 ser\u00e1 un momento clave.
