El hallazgo podr\u00eda, a futuro, ayudar a detectar riesgos para la salud asociados al estr\u00e9s prolongado a partir de ex\u00e1menes que ya se realizan de forma habitual.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El estudio fue presentado a comienzos de diciembre durante la reuni\u00f3n anual de la <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Radiological Society of North America<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (RSNA). La investigaci\u00f3n emple\u00f3 un modelo de aprendizaje profundo entrenado para reconocer y medir autom\u00e1ticamente las gl\u00e1ndulas suprarrenales en tomograf\u00edas de t\u00f3rax. Estas gl\u00e1ndulas desempe\u00f1an un papel central en la respuesta del organismo al estr\u00e9s, ya que producen cortisol, una hormona clave en este proceso.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">De acuerdo con <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health Canada<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, el estr\u00e9s est\u00e1 vinculado a m\u00faltiples problemas de salud f\u00edsica y mental, como enfermedades card\u00edacas, trastornos gastrointestinales, afecciones mentales y un sistema inmunol\u00f3gico debilitado. Sin embargo, hasta ahora no exist\u00eda una herramienta objetiva y ampliamente disponible para medir su impacto biol\u00f3gico acumulado a lo largo del tiempo.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Volumen suprarrenal y estr\u00e9s a largo plazo<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A diferencia de una medici\u00f3n puntual de cortisol, que refleja el estr\u00e9s en un momento espec\u00edfico, los investigadores plantearon que el tama\u00f1o de las gl\u00e1ndulas suprarrenales podr\u00eda dar cuenta de una carga fisiol\u00f3gica sostenida. Con ayuda de IA, el equipo calcul\u00f3 un nuevo indicador denominado \u00cdndice de Volumen Suprarrenal (AVI), que relaciona el volumen total de estas gl\u00e1ndulas con la estatura de cada persona.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El modelo se prob\u00f3 utilizando datos de casi 3.000 participantes del Estudio Multi\u00e9tnico de Aterosclerosis, una cohorte de seguimiento prolongado que combina im\u00e1genes m\u00e9dicas con informaci\u00f3n cl\u00ednica. Los resultados mostraron que las personas que reportaban niveles m\u00e1s altos de estr\u00e9s percibido presentaban, en promedio, un AVI mayor. Adem\u00e1s, este \u00edndice se asoci\u00f3 con niveles de cortisol y con resultados cardiovasculares a largo plazo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Los autores se\u00f1alan que los hallazgos son preliminares y que ser\u00e1 necesaria su validaci\u00f3n en otras poblaciones, grupos etarios y tipos de esc\u00e1neres antes de que el m\u00e9todo pueda aplicarse en la pr\u00e1ctica cl\u00ednica. No obstante, destacan que el enfoque demuestra el potencial de la inteligencia artificial para extraer nueva informaci\u00f3n biol\u00f3gica a partir de estudios de imagen ya existentes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">En Canad\u00e1, por ejemplo, se realizaron aproximadamente 6,4 millones de tomograf\u00edas computarizadas financiadas con fondos p\u00fablicos durante el a\u00f1o fiscal 2022-2023, lo que equivale a unas 160 exploraciones por cada 1.000 personas.
