Quebec pharmacists will be able to renew prescriptions without limit under new rules
Pharmacists in Quebec will soon have greater powers to renew prescriptions, in a move that seeks to facilitate patient access to their treatments and reduce pressure on doctors and clinics.
The change is part of a gradual expansion of pharmacists’ responsibilities in the province. The new regulations will allow them, in certain cases, to renew prescriptions without a maximum number of renewals, provided that the established conditions for ensuring patient safety are met.
The measure seeks to prevent people with long-term treatments from having to return periodically to the doctor’s office just to obtain a new authorization to continue taking a medication that has already been prescribed to them.
Expanding pharmacists’ responsibilities does not mean they will assume the role of physicians. Their involvement will continue to be limited by the regulations governing their practice and by the nature of the medication and treatment. Quebec has already made progress in recent years in granting them greater responsibilities within the healthcare system.
A change to facilitate access to medicines
The main objective of the reform is to improve continuity of treatment and free up time in medical appointments. In situations where a patient already has a diagnosis and established treatment, the option to manage renewals directly at the pharmacy can avoid additional appointments that don’t necessarily require a doctor’s intervention.
Pharmacists now also have the authority to modify certain treatments and prescribe some medications in specific circumstances. These powers are part of a broader Quebec strategy to leverage pharmacy professionals as a first-line access point to the healthcare system.
The measure could particularly benefit patients who use medication long-term and need to maintain continuity of treatment. It could also reduce some barriers for people who face difficulties getting a medical appointment.
However, renewal will not be automatic, nor will it mean that all medications can be renewed indefinitely. Pharmacists will need to assess each situation and determine whether continuing treatment is appropriate according to professional standards and the patient’s clinical condition.
